SRM Maturity and Reporting: Where Organizations Stand
SRM is widely recognized as important, but many organizations are still developing their capabilities.
CAPS Research’s latest benchmarking report, Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) Practices & Reporting, shows that the average SRM maturity remains at 2.6 out of 5, indicating many teams are still building foundational and structural elements.
While core elements like supplier segmentation and performance management are more commonly in place, more advanced capabilities, such as strategic collaboration and innovation partnerships, are less consistently implemented despite being viewed as important.

Collaboration Drops Off Beyond Core Practices
Only 30% of companies host business continuity information sessions and 22% conduct joint projects to better manage risks and disruptions with Tier-1 suppliers.
While operational interactions such as regular meetings (84%) and performance reviews (80%) with Tier-1 suppliers are more common, collaborative and relationship-building activities are reported less frequently. This points to an opportunity to expand supplier engagement beyond core practices.

Deepen SRM Impact: Visibility, Focus, and Collaboration
Strengthening SRM often involves improving visibility across the supply base and taking a more structured approach to supplier engagement. The CAPS resource, Enhance Supplier Collaboration and Partnerships, brings together two related areas of focus in a single document.

It includes a 5-step framework for effective working relationships with suppliers along with 8 practical steps for supply base rationalization. Together, these resources provide guidance on assessing the supply base and supporting more consistent supplier engagement practices.
